How EMDR works

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a structured therapy approach for working with distressing experiences and the thoughts, feelings, and physical reactions connected to them. The goal is to help a memory feel less upsetting, rather than erase what happened.

  1. Talk and plan

You and your therapist talk about what brings you to therapy, your experiences, and your goals. Together, you discuss whether EMDR fits your needs and choose what to work on.

  2. Prepare at your pace

Your therapist explains the process, answers questions, and helps you prepare ways to manage difficult feelings. Preparation and pacing are part of treatment, so you do not need to revisit everything at once.

  3. Work with a memory

With your therapist’s guidance, you focus on a memory while following side-to-side eye movements, sounds, or taps. You notice the thoughts, feelings, or body sensations that come up and check in between brief sets. Each person’s experience is different.

These are broad stages of the process. Preparation, pacing, and ongoing check-ins are tailored to your needs.

Questions about getting started

Do I have to describe every detail?

EMDR does not require you to describe every detail of a difficult experience out loud. You and your therapist can discuss what you feel comfortable sharing and what they need to understand to plan your care.

How long does EMDR treatment take?

There is no fixed number of sessions. Your experiences, needs, and preparation all affect the pace of treatment. Ask your clinician about session length and how you will review progress together.
